It’s -2 in Chicago, But We’re Starting Our Garden!

It’s -2 right now in Chicago, there’s a foot and a half of snow on the ground, Puxatawnee Phil just predicted 6 more weeks of winter, and I just started my garden! Yep! And nothing has given me so much hope of the potential of spring coming as planting seeds for my garden.

Last year, we built our beautiful organic, non-GMO garden and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Even for someone like me who doesn’t have a green thumb- whatsoever. We grew kale, onions, broccoli, tomatoes, spinach, basil, cilantro, oregano, kohlrabi, beets, radishes, beans, dill, strawberries, blueberries, zucchini, cucumbers, potatoes and even some odd-shaped (but delicious) carrots. When I was hungry, and every night for lunch and dinner, I would walk out my back door with my clippers and pick some food for dinner. It was almost magical!

Then the cold came and the organic, non-GMO bounty that we produced slowed to a halt. We’ve had to resort to grocery stores to get all of our produce.  But today, as I look out my window at my snow covered garden, I have a few glimmers of hope because my seeds came today!!  I ordered my seeds from SeedsNow about 4 days ago, and they came in the mail today. A big, fat, beautiful pack of non-GMO seeds. We got a lot of the same things we ordered last year, and then decided this year we’re going to step it up a notch. We have 38 varieties of herbs, veggies and fruits that will be starting up soon. We are going to build a second garden bed that will wrap around the addition of our house and try to plant and grow more than we did last year.

When the seeds came in the mail today, I felt like a kid feels on Christmas morning- hopeful, excited and completely tore into the package with reckless abandon. And the best part- my kids were just as excited as I was!  This year, I ordered some soil starter packs to start my seeds in instead of the dixie cups I started them in last year. We started about 6 different rows of seeds tonight, with many, many more coming over the next few days. My kids and I spent tonight playing in the dirt, for the first time in months and it was AWESOME.
